Doug Pederson bringing in an old buddy to fire up his Eagles: Brett Favre

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — It’s easy to forget, but Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson already has a Super Bowl ring. He was the third quarterback on a Green Bay Packers team that won Super Bowl XXXI.

Pederson’s old teammate and friend Brett Favre happened to be coming to Minneapolis for Super Bowl weekend, so he called in a favor. Favre will speak to the Eagles on Saturday morning at their hotel, the day before they play the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

“He and I still stay in touch. We’re great friends,” Pederson said. “I figured that since he was going to be in town, I asked him.”

Pederson is bringing in someone who knows how to beat the Patriots in a Super Bowl. Favre threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score in the 35-21 win. Pederson played seven seasons in Green Bay, all with Favre.

Favre is a Hall of Famer and one of the players from the past who draws immediate respect from the guys playing now.

“He’s one of the greatest to ever play the game,” Eagles quarterback Nick Foles said. “It’s how he played, his toughness, rocket arm, off his back foot he could throw it anywhere he wants. He was in big games, won big games, played a lot of football. Anytime you have an opportunity to listen to someone like him speak, it’s huge. Especially listening to what wisdom and all he gives us, I know everyone on our team is excited to hear to him speak.”
