Dothan Trooper recognized for saving critically injured 4-year-old in 2023 crash

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — An Alabama State Trooper from Dothan was honored for his “heroic lifesaving actions in the line of duty” during a 2023 crash.

During the Houston County Commission meeting Thursday morning, Senior Trooper Christopher Carlton was presented with the 2024 Alabama Legislative Meritorious Service Award.

“This is a great honor,” said State Representative Jeff Sorrells.

This award recognized Sen. Trooper Carlton’s actions during a near-fatal crash in February 2023.

Sen. Trooper Carlton responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 84 and found a car had struck a tree, with the driver trapped and a 4-year-old child with a severe head injury.

Since more than one patient was on the scene, Sen. Trooper Carlton was advised to call a second ambulance but took matters into his own hands.

Sen. Trooper Carlton and a nurse who had stopped to help transported the child in his patrol vehicle to a local hospital. The 4-year-old was stabilized upon arrival.

Carlton was not the only state trooper to receive this honor during the commission meeting.
