US President Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to promise he will make a "major statement" from the White House upon his return to Washington, DC.

Trump is heading home today from the Philippines, the final leg of his two-week tour of Asia.

The exact nature of the announcement was not revealed, with the President saying its scheduling was to be confirmed.

President Trump concluded his visit to Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines saying that all countries that trade with the US “know that the rules have changed”.

“The United States has to be treated fairly and in a reciprocal fashion,” Trump tweeted from Manila. “The massive TRADE deficits must go down quickly!” he added.

Trump said he had made a lot of friends during the five-country jaunt - notably the Philippines' firebrand President Rodrigo Duterte - and branded the trip "tremendously successful".
