Donald Trump spends between four and eight hours a day, it has been reported.

The New York Times, which said it spoke to a number of people close to the president, said he starts watching TV at about 5.30 am with CNN - a station he has frequently criticised.

He then, the paper reported switches to "Fox and Friends" on the conservative station, Fox and Friends, which is rather more to his taste.

Other presidential favourites include Fox primetime shows hosted by Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and Jeanine Pirro.

According to the paper one Mr Trump and White House technical support staff are allowed to touch the remote control.

Reports of the president's voracious television watching contradict an interview he gave to reporters during a trip to Asia.

“Believe it or not, even when I’m in Washington or New York, I do not watch much television,” Trump said. "People that don’t know me, they like to say I watch television — people with fake sources. You know, fake reporters, fake sources.”

“But I don’t get to watch much television. Primarily because of documents. I’m reading documents. A lot,” Trump continued. “I actually read much more — I read you people much more than I watch television.”
