Donald Trump refuses to sack press secretary Sean Spicer ‘because he gets good ratings’

Donald Trump has reportedly refused to fire his gaffe-prone press secretary as he believes he is good for television ratings.

Despite a series of very public errors, the President told attendees at a working lunch last month that Sean Spicer is not going anywhere.

The Washington Post reported Trump as stating: “I’m not firing Sean Spicer.

“That guy gets great ratings. Everyone tunes in.”

Trump went on to compare Spicer’s daily news briefings to a “daytime soap opera”.

Spicer has come under fire for his gaffes since starting the role in January, when he compared the Trump and Obama inauguration crowds.

He told the White House press pack that Trump had “the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe”.

His most notable error came earlier this month when he appeared to suggest that Hitler did not use chemical weapons while condemning the chemical weapon attack on Syrians.

Spicer was forced to apologise and clarify his remarks when he was accused of Holocaust denial after he was reminded that millions of Jews were killed in gas chambers in Nazi concentration camps.

He also labelled those concentration camps “Holocaust centres”.

Spicer apologised, saying: “I screwed up. From a professional level, I think it’s disappointing because I think I let the President down.”
