Donald Trump welcomed his wife Melania home to the White House on Saturday after a week in hospital for kidney treatment - but managed to misspell her name as "Melanie" in a hastily deleted tweet.

The embarrassing gaffe does at least resolve one mystery. The length of hospital stay had raised questions about whether the first lady's condition was more complicated than first revealed.

"Great to have our incredible first lady back home in the White House," wrote Mr Trump on Twitter.

"Melanie is feeling and doing really well. Thank you for all of your prayers and best wishes!"

The message was quickly replaced with a message that spelled the first lady's name correctly but is unlikely to have done anything for marital harmony.

It also sparked a string of humorous responses on social media.

Mrs Trump's quiet return was as sudden as her trip to hospital. The White House had made no mention of any medical issue despite a string of recent public appearances.

She was admitted to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre near Washington on Monday, when she had an embolisation procedure to treat an unspecified kidney condition the White House described as benign.

Her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, declined to release additional details, citing Mrs Trump's right to privacy.

"The first lady returned home to the White House this morning," she said in an emailed statement. "She is resting comfortably and remains in high spirits.

"Our office has received thousands of calls and emails wishing Mrs Trump well, and we thank everyone who has taken the time to reach out."

On Tuesday, the president tweeted that his wife would be released in "2 or 3" days, but Thursday and Friday passed without word from the White House on her whereabouts.

Mr Trump had visited her during her first three days in hospital. But he did not visit on Thursday or Friday, sparking speculation that the first lady had been discharged.

The first lady had earlier announced on Wednesday via Twitter that she was "feeling great" and looking forward to going home, but gave no indication of when that might happen.

On Friday, she tweeted about the deadly school shooting at a Houston-area high school but did not update her followers on her medical situation.
