Donald Trump is suddenly feeling sentimental about his son Barron — and it’s drawing a lot of raised eyebrows. During day one of his hush money trial in New York on Monday, the former U.S. President claimed that he would miss the high school graduation of his 18-year-old son, who he shares with wife Melania Trump.

The proceedings will decide if Trump is guilty in the 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal during the 2016 presidential election. Yesterday, Judge Juan Merchan declined a request from Trump to take April 25 off from the trial so he could attend Supreme Court arguments involving whether or not he has “presidential immunity” in another of his four criminal cases, according to The Associated Press. Trump also asked to miss the trial on May 17 for Barron’s graduation, to which the judge responded it “depends on if we are on time and where we are in the trial,” per Forbes.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 16: Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the media with attorney Todd Blanche before attending jury selection on the second day of his trial for allegedly covering up hush money payments at Manhattan Criminal Court on April 16, 2024 in New York City. Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records last year, which prosecutors say was an effort to hide a potential sex scandal, both before and after the 2016 presidential election. Because Trump apparently hears what he wants to hear, he posted on Truth Social that the judge “prohibited” him from attending Barron’s ceremony. When he stepped out of the courtroom on Monday afternoon, he told reporters that the judge ruled “that I can’t go to my son’s graduation or that I can’t go to the United States Supreme Court,” per The Palm Beach Post. Then, he complained about not being allowed to campaign as the presumptive Republican nominee. “It’s perfect for the radical left Democrats. It’s exactly what they want,” he said.

Trump — the first former president to stand trial on criminal charges — wanting to attend his youngest son’s graduation seemed a little off for the notoriously-distant dad. And people were rightly suspicious of his motives, as he reportedly never attended the graduations of any of his other children: Donald Trump Jr., 46, Ivanka, 42, Eric, 40, or Tiffany, 30.

One person tweeted, “Donald Trump did not attend the High School graduation ceremonies for: —Don Jr. —Eric —Ivanka, or —Tiffany And Barron’s graduation is on Friday, May 17th, when court is not even scheduled or in session.”

“I would not be surprised if Donald Trump has never attended any graduation other than his own,” someone else wrote. “I mean, why would he attend any event where he is not the center of attention? He’s turned his own son’s graduation into a political football. Just more reprehensible behavior.”

“If Donald Trump had been more interested in spending time with his son in the first months of his son’s life instead of spending time with Stormy Daniels in those days, Donald Trump would definitely be available for his son’s high school graduation this year,” another person tweeted.

Other people commented on how noticeably absent Trump’s family was from the courtroom on Monday. “I have rarely seen a defendant facing trial alone with no family, at least one person, in the courtroom for him,” Joyce Vance, former federal prosecutor and legal analyst, tweeted, per Newsweek. “It’s a sad commentary for a former president with four grown children & a wife, all of whom seem to have deserted him in the moment.”

If Trump doesn’t get to attend his son’s graduation (presuming he would anyway), then it would be his own fault. Maybe don’t commit felonies if you want to be a more present dad? Just a thought.
