It was a brief moment where our worries went away. The Donald was having a laugh. A good old-fashioned chuckle. And we joined in.

In case you missed it, Donald Trump was speaking alongside his opponent Hillary Clinton at the Alfred E. Smith charity dinner in New York. The white-tie dinner is meant to be a comedic reprieve from the intensity of the election campaign.

And as Donald started his speech, it appeared like we were going to be treated to a break from the horrible rhetoric we have been subjected to for the past few weeks. He peaked with a joke about his wife, Melania.

"I really have to say, the media is even more biased this year than ever before. Ever. You want the proof? Michelle Obama gives a speech and everyone loves it. It's fantastic. They think she's absolutely great," Trump said.

"My wife, Melania, gives the exact same speech, and people get on her case! And I don't get it! I don't know why ... Oh, I'm in trouble when I go home tonight."

Oh how we laughed. Then he got nasty, digging into Hillary as the crowd booed him.

At one point he said Hillary believes it's vital to have "one public policy and a totally different policy in private," he said, adding, "For example, here she is tonight, in public, pretending not to hate Catholics."

With that awkward, uncomfortable joke, we suddenly remembered there are 18 days until the end of this nightmare.
