Dolly Parton Ripped on Twitter for Dropping ‘Dixie’ From Her Show

A certain segment of Twitter is not happy with Dolly Parton right now — and they’re not just whistling “Dixie.”

“Jolene” singer Parton has come under fire on social media, after choosing to drop the word “Dixie” from one of her dinner shows.

In a press release issued Sunday, Parton cited changing attitudes as one reason for the name change.

“Our shows currently are identified by where they are located,” Parton said. “Some examples are Smoky Mountain Adventures or Dixie Stampede. We also recognize that attitudes change and feel that by streamlining the names of our shows, it will remove any confusion or concerns about our shows and will help our efforts to expand into new cities.”

Starting with the 2018 season, the press release noted, the former Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede will be re-branded Dolly Parton’s Stampede.

The news created a separate stampede on social media, as critics rushed to condemn the decision.

While the name change drew tweets of support from many, others accused Parton of caving to political correctness.

“Are you kidding me? #dollyparton is kowtowing to the PC police and removing #Dixie from her show in #Branson, now is called Dolly Parton’s Stampede! Unbelievable!” one disapproving tweet wrote.

“Dolly Parton drops the name ‘Dixie’ because it not PC. Very disappointed in her. I guess Dixie Cups isn’t PC,” another tweet read. “Should people named ‘Dixie’ be shunned until they change their name? #DollyParton I’m just saying. This may backfire.”

Another Twitter user, who goes by the handle Ron Sellers Go MAGA, implored Parton to ” stop this renaming of Dixie. Very sad. Good bye. Good luck.”

Meanwhile, an account bearing the name SassyPatriotGirl cautioned the singer, “@DollyParton don’t let the libs do this to your heritage!!! Don’t let them shame the heart of Dixie! “

“@DollyParton are y’all taking the nativity out of the show too? Screw all of you that had a part to play in changing the name and removing #Dixie,” read another tweet, which included the hashtag #boycottdolly.

Another Twitter user called Parton “pathetic” and “a sellout.”

“@DollyParton so your doing away with the word ‘Dixie’ huh. After years of supporting you, I have to say you are pathetic,” the tweet read. “You’ve became a sellout because that’s what this comes down to. Money. Your pathetic and I for one hope you see this. Money is worth your heritage huh. #$$$$$”

This isn’t the first time that Parton has stirred ire in conservative circles. In September, at the Emmy Awards, Parton appeared on stage with her “9 to 5” co-stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, who took a barely-veiled poke at President Donald Trump.

The criticism prompted actor and noted conservative James Woods to come to Parton’s defense.

“Do not judge @DollyParton because she was caught between two gargoyles. I guarantee she would never have approved that copy ahead of time,” Woods wrote in a series of posts defending the “Jolene” singer.

“She is a very sweet person by nature. I am certain she was so caught off-guard, she was literally speechless,” the actor added.
