DOJ says investigation revealed Lynchburg man allegedly connected to multiple crimes

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The Department of Justice (DOJ) says a man from Lynchburg was arrested on a federal criminal complaint and is facing a gun charge.

According to the DOJ, 27-year-old Brandon Cole Webber was taken into federal custody and charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Court documents revealed that on May 5, 2022, police officers were flagged down by a citizen on 5th Street in Lynchburg after they reported seeing a man, later identified as Webber, allegedly fall out of a moving vehicle. The citizen said Webber then allegedly began shooting at the vehicle and ran toward the Family Dollar on Federal Street in downtown Lynchburg.

Two witnesses driving past the incident also allegedly saw Webber fall out of the vehicle. The DOJ says Webber then asked the witnesses for a ride, but that’s when police arrived.

Officers searched the vehicle and allegedly found a loaded 9 mm gun, a white bag with suspected methamphetamine, and a wallet belonging to a man in the vehicle.

As the investigation continued, court documents filed on May 17, 2024, revealed that Webber was allegedly involved in several incidents.

The DOJ says, that on Nov. 29, 2023, the Lynchburg Fire Department was called to an overdose at the Lynchburg Grand Hotel. Once on the scene, Webber was allegedly found in the bathroom with several drug paraphernalia. When Lynchburg police arrived, Webber fled the scene but was apprehended outside the hotel.

After searching for the room, the DOJ says officers allegedly found a loaded Glock 38 gun and a bag containing suspected methamphetamine.

On Nov. 30, 2023, Webber was charged with violating various state gun statutes. However, after receiving treatment for the overdose at the hospital, officers were not able to locate him.

As the investigation continued, police believed that Webber allegedly received assistance from a former City of Lynchburg Community Corrections and Pretrial Services Agency Officer. Investigators believed Webber and the former officer started a romantic relationship in Aug. 2023 and he was being fed non-public sensitive information.

For example, on five separate occasions in December 2023, Subject-1’s credentials were used to view a search warrant executed at the Lynchburg Grand Hotel on November 29, 2023 in relation to Webber’s overdose incident,”

said the DOJ in a release.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Lynchburg Police Department are investigating this case.
