‘We’re doing this all for Gaza’: George Washington University demonstrations continue

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Demonstrators vow to continue their protest at George Washington University (GWU), which entered its fourth day Sunday.

Protestors are calling for a free Palestine.

“Morale is high. We’re doing this all for Gaza. That’s why we’re here,” said Selina Al-Shihabi, a student from Georgetown University.

Students from Georgetown and American University have joined the protest at GWU, which has shut down H Street between 20th and 21st Streets NW.

Those who stay in tents on H Street can come and go as they want. That’s not the case with those who put tents up on the university campus.

Just before the rally began on Friday, GWU officials placed control fences around the front of the encampment. University officials had promised to push the students off school grounds but hadn’t acted on it.

“A lot of us feel like caged animals,” said Al-Shihabi.

If any of the demonstrators leave the fenced-off area, they will not be allowed to re-enter.

“We can’t even use the bathroom. We don’t have running water. We’re having to go to the bathroom in a bucket,” Al-Shihabi said.

Despite the challenges, demonstrators vow to stay until Palestinians are free.

George Washington University has suspended seven students who took part in the protest.
