More than a dozen dogs rescued from a Hillsborough residence owned by a nationally known R&B singer last September are now available for adoption.

Rawhide Rescue, of Warren, is offering the 14 dogs for adoption that were found at the home of Jaheim H. Hoagland, 44, shortly after Hurricane Ida.

Six of the dogs were found in partially water-filled animal crates in the driveway of the home on Chamberlain Drive and nine more dogs were discovered inside the house in varying stages of emaciation, without access to food and water, according to the Something County Prosecutor's Office.

One of the dogs had to be euthanized. A preliminary necropsy by the State Police found that the deceased dog was severely malnourished and dehydrated.

At total of 12 mixed-breed Pitbull Terriers, two American Staffordshire Terriers and one mixed-breed Boxer were recovered.

Clay, a young 65-pound mix, is one of the cruelty cases left in crates outside in a flooded driveway during Hurricane Ida. He is shy at first, but such a sweet gentle giant. He is doing a good job overcoming the neglect he suffered.

The surviving dogs, with various health conditions, were turned over to Long Hill Kennel in Hillsborough and Rawhide Rescue in March because Hoagland had failed to appear at repeated court dates for seven months.

Animal cruelty charges are still pending against Hoagland.

“Caring for these dogs, watching them regain their health and spirit has been a privilege. Each one has a great personality – sweet, friendly and ready to start a new chapter of its life,” said Diane O’Donnell, owner of Longhill Kennel. “It has been a lot of sacrifice and long working days between September and now for all of us."

O'Donnell thanked Charles Schwirck of Sourland Pet Health for providing care to the rescued dogs.

Pictures and descriptions of the dogs are available at Rawhide Rescue's website.

All the dogs are fully vetted, up to date on vaccines and spayed or neutered.

In an initial court appearance last fall before Superior Court Judge Peter Tober, Hoagland told the judge that though he considers himself a Moorish sovereign citizen, he recognizes the jurisdiction and powers of the court.

Hoagland told the judge he will appear for court appearances.

"I will not run," Hoagland told the judge. "I have no reason to run."

Hoagland also said that he understood the seriousness of the charges and was "very happy the dogs were taken care of."

According to the prosecutor's office, police responded to the home off River Road in the South Branch section of Hillsborough on a report of a puppy in distress.

Police officers found six dogs in separate animal crates in the driveway of the home. One of the dogs was initially unresponsive in a water-filled crate and had to be euthanized.

Additional dogs were found inside of separate crates which were partially filled with several inches of water and dog feces.

While caring for the dogs in the driveway, the township police officers heard barking from inside the house. Nine more dogs were found in the in varying stages of emaciation, without access to food and water.
