Dog saves family during house fire in Jackson County town

GREENWOOD, Mo. — A dog in Greenwood, Missouri, became a hero Tuesday morning when they woke their family during a house fire, according to the Lee’s Summit Fire Department.

Around 3 a.m., a family called the Lee’s Summit Fire Department and said the back of their house was on fire and they were evacuating with their pets.

The fire was at a house on Willow Drive, near South Huntington Drive.

The family said the dog alerted them of the fire, according to LSFD.

When the fire department arrived, smoke and fire were coming from the back of the two-story, single-family home. Everyone at the home was outside when responders arrived.

Firefighters put out the fire in the back of the house as crews entered the building to check for fire inside. A search of the building confirmed that everyone was out. The fire was under control by 3:14 a.m., according to LSFD.

Responders said the fire originated on the deck and was contained to the deck and back of the house.

The residents were able to return to the house after the fire. The Greenwood Police Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
