‘So grateful’: Family of dog saved in Medina blaze thanks firefighters

MEDINA, Ohio (WJW) –- “We will forever be so grateful,” those are words from a family member of a dog named Henry whose life was saved from a burning home by Medina firefighters.

The Medina Fire Department was able to save Henry from a fully-involved house fire Friday night.

The dog was placed on oxygen for 36 hours but was able to go home Sunday, a family member told Fox 8 News.

“Not for a moment do they [firefighters] think we give up, instead they see the one thing that can give hope to someone who has just lost everything,” the family member said who asked that her name not be used. “[firefighters] save more lives than one pup, they brought hope through sacrifice, and searched, and gave a silver lining to the sooted remains of what was.”

The fire broke out sometime after 8 p.m., fire noticed by neighbors.

“I went ahead and called 911, and they said there was a report of a bonfire,” Russell Foss, a neighbor that lives across the street said. “I said ‘no, the house is engulfed in flames.’”

The Medina Fire Department arrived to the scene with flames shooting through the roof. All occupants made it out safely, but the family dog was still inside. Residents thought surely there was no way the dog would survive.

But somehow the dog was located, rescued, and treated with oxygen by medics on scene before being transported to a local emergency vet.

A family member told Fox 8 News Sunday that the dog, named Henry, is “doing great and is going to be weaned off of oxygen and possibly come home Monday.”

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. Neighbors are just happy no one was seriously hurt, and all animals were rescued.

“Oh, definitely,” Foss said. “I mean, you know, we see a younger person there at times and walking as many as three dogs. We were concerned it could have been, you know, as many as three dogs and that we’re worried about.”

A GoFundMe page was created to help the family.
