Dog rescued after 4 days stranded on frozen lake

Icebound hound plucked from Utah reservoir by rescue crew

A dog that survived four days and three nights stranded on an icy reservoir in Utah was saved over the weekend in a dramatic rescue effort captured on video.

"When I saw the actual footage of what happened, it just made me cry," Charelle Meriweather, Sadie's owner, told Tribune TV. "I didn't realize how thin it actually was."

Meriweather says she dropped off the black Labrador mix at her cousin's house last week, but the dog got out. Sadie was soon spotted on the ice of nearby Deer Creek Reservoir. Meriweather's brother used a canoe to try to reach Sadie but was unable to navigate the icy waters. On Thursday night — three days after Sadie's escape — Meriweather called the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office, which dispatched a rescue boat to pluck the icebound hound from the reservoir the next day.

"Hats off to volunteer Toby Norton for making the perfect grab," the Utah Sheriff's Office wrote in a Facebook post.

According to Meriweather, Sadie is back home and doing "great."

But when it comes to dogs getting stranded on ice, Sadie's certainly not alone.

Earlier this month, Roger Cruickshank captured aerial drone footage of a dramatic dog rescue on Scotland's Loch Morlich. According to Cruickshank, the dog had apparently gone through the ice when he tried to fetch a ball thrown by its owner.

And last month, firefighters in Fairfax County, Va., braved frigid waters to save a dog that had fallen through the ice on a partially frozen lake.

The name of that rescued dog: Angel.
