It Doesn't Take Much to Turn a '66 Riviera Into a Killer Custom

Design took the front seat at General Motors in the 1960s. We see this in the many beautiful Corvettes and Cadillacs that came out of Bill Mitchell's design studios in that era, but it's highly-experimental machines like the Buick Riviera that really underline that theme. And with a few select changes, a bone-stock second-generation Riv can become a killer custom.

Escondido, California's Hot Rods and Custom Stuff built this gold 'flaked '66 Riviera from a straight and clean stocker. Shop founder Randy Cark explains that, while the look is all old-school custom, the car pays major homage to the original design.

So, while the three-inch-chopped roof, air-ride suspension, big-inch wheels, and gallons of gold paint all take the car far from its factory-stock roots, the drivetrain and interior all remain nearly the same as they were straight from the General's assembly line. It's proof that, with a design as daring as the Riviera's, it doesn't take much to build a jaw-dropping custom.
