‘Doctor Who’ Season 10 Finale Synopsis, Trailers Released

“Doctor Who” Season 10 is coming to an end, but the Time Lord still has much to do before the hiatus. In episode 11, the Master returned and met Missy, and Bill was turned into one of the Cybermen. Based on the episode 12 synopsis and promo videos, the season finale of the BBC America drama will bring even more intensity.

“In the season finale, the Doctor [Peter Capaldi] makes a final stand against an army of Cybermen, to protect a tiny band of humans from destruction,” the “Doctor Who” finale synopsis teases.

The title for Season 10, episode 12 is “The Doctor Falls,” and the trailers hint that audiences might see the regeneration — or at least the beginning of it — in the finale. Both promo videos show that familiar golden energy coming out of the Doctor’s hands, but it could easily be a red herring. After all, David Tennant’s doctor also used regeneration energy to heal in 2008 shortly before he actually left the series. This wouldn’t even be the first fake out for Capaldi. Fans got their first glimpse of regeneration energy in episode 8.

In any case, the marketing team certainly seems to want fans to think this could be it for the Doctor. In the BBC One trailer, the Doctor says ominously, “Who I am is where I stand, and where I stand is where I fall.”

If this is the Twelfth Doctor’s end, it might be a fitting one. After all, Cybermen are classic villains. “You know the stories,” the Doctor says in the Next Time trailer. “There’s only ever been one way to stop that many Cybermen: me.”

Though he is saving the universe from the Cybermen, he is also attempting to save Missy (Michelle Gomez) from the influence of evil, a task which the Master (John Simm) will likely make more difficult. Both promo videos also make it clear that the Doctor is determined to bring Missy to the good side. “Stand with me,” the Doctor seems to ask her. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

Everyone seems to be at a fork in the road in the “Doctor Who” finale. It still isn’t clear if Bill (Pearl Mackie) will survive the season, and it hasn’t been announced if Mackie will return for “Doctor Who” Season 11. Last audiences saw her, Bill had been turned into one of the Mondasian Cybermen. With so many Cybermen being blown up in the season finale, it’s safe to say that Bill is in danger.

Thought Bill’s departure is not confirmed, the Doctor’s exit absolutely is happening at some point. Capaldi mysteriously told “The Graham Norton Show” in April that he had already filmed his character’s regeneration, but he also noted that he would return for the Christmas episode this winter. “Well, you got to watch it and see. I have done the death of my character,” Capaldi confirmed.

When Capaldi leaves, so will showrunner Steven Moffat. The executive producer has been leading the sci-fi drama since Season 5, which aired in 2010. Chris Chibnall will take over while Moffat starts work on his new show “Dracula” with Mark Gatiss.

The “Doctor Who” Season 10 finale airs Saturday at 8:30 p.m. EDT on BBC America.
