Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has praised Indira Varma ahead of her appearance in the show’s Bridgerton-themed episode.
The BBC sci-fi show is due to return to screens next month, following the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) as they embark on their first season of adventures.
Naturally, there is plenty of time-travel involved, with the sixth episode taking the pair to Regency-era Bath in 1813 as they encounter Varma’s “mysterious” Duchess, in an episode that Davies previewed in an interview with Metro.

“Indira’s spectacular, actually. I think Jinkx (Monsoon) was the most amazing villain, but I was kind of expecting that, it’s what we hoped for. Indira really leaned into it,” he said. “She’s in what we call the Bridgerton episode set in 1813 in Regency Bath.
“She kind of looks like a lady at the manor — she looks very privileged, posh, haughty, smart and aloof. And then oh my god she lets rip and runs and fights and is completely wonderful, so that was a joy to see.”
Davies, who returned to the show after his previous stint as showrunner, recently teased the series finale, promising that it would be the “biggest” and most “devastating” conclusion to a season thus far.

“That’s a spine throughout the series – we saw at Christmas [Ruby] was a foundling, left at the church at Ruby Road,” he began. “The Doctor’s now… mysteriously abandoned in outer space, doesn’t know his parents either, and that’s a big connection between the two of them.
“Every episode stands on its own. There will be a running theme and running story that’s going to build and build and build to 'The Most Devastating Finale'. Literally, the biggest finale ever.”
Doctor Who will return for its 14th series on May 11 at midnight, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
