EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 54-year-old woman shot and killed her husband last year two days after Christmas in South-Central El Paso after she found out that he was having an affair, according to court documents obtained by KTSM.

UPDATE: Husband fatally shot by wife in South-Central El Paso

Court documents say Luz Elena Martinez is facing a murder charge after she “intentionally and knowingly caused the death of her husband Jose Luis Avalos Reyes (age 47) by shooting him with a firearm.”

Court documents say just before 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27, Martinez called 911 to report that she had shot her husband and officers responded to the 400 block of French Place in South-Central El Paso.

When officers arrived at the scene, they met Martinez who was sitting inside a taxi van which was parked right in front of the home.

Officers entered the home to check on Reyes and found him dead.

Court documents say Reyes had “suspected gun shot wounds” and officers also saw a pistol on the nightstand next to the bed where Reyes was laying.

Officers also saw a knife positioned in Reyes’ left hand which was later discovered to be his non-dominant hand, according to court documents.

Martinez told officers that she had been raped and requested a lawyer. However, the investigation revealed that Martinez admitted to a witness that she allegedly shot Reyes.

Court documents say Martinez made a call to a family member after she shot Reyes and prior to dialing 911.

A sexual assault evidence collection kit was also performed on Martinez by a sexual assault nurse examiner and Martinez told her, “At one point, he came at with me the knife so I shot him, then he stood up with the knife and I shot him again.”

Court documents say Martinez found out that Reyes was having an affair and she hired a private investigator to follow him.

Court documents also say Martinez hired a divorce lawyer.

Evidence at the scene indicated that Reyes was laying down on the bed when Martinez allegedly shot him at a close distance.

Court documents also say evidence contradicts the statement she provided the sexual assault nurse examiner in which she said she shot Reyes when he stood up with a knife.
