Division Avenue construction to trigger two-way traffic near GRCC campus

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A heads up for drivers in downtown Grand Rapids. Stretches of Lyon and Fountain Streets will be temporarily opened up to two-way traffic later this month.

Officials at Grand Rapids Community College issued a notice to students and staff this week that the two streets will start running both ways between Division and Ransom avenues on Monday, April 29.

“This will have a big impact on vehicle and pedestrian traffic,” the release states. “Please be extra attentive and aware as you travel to and from campus as others may not know about the traffic shift.”

The traffic shift is related to the Division Avenue construction project that started earlier this year.

A detailed plan presented to the Economic Development Project Team says crews will spend most of 2024 relocating and replacing utilities along Division between Fulton and Michigan Streets, then the road will be repaired next year.

The project will include new sidewalks and pavement, separate bike lanes, new decorative lighting and new water and sewer lines.

Access to all businesses will remain open, although detour routes will be adjusted to accommodate different closures. City officials said only one intersection between Fulton, Fountain and Lyon will be closed at any one time.

The Division Avenue and Fulton Street intersection is expected to be closed for four months starting in July.

A PowerPoint presentation explaining the construction project is available on the city’s website.
