Miramar teen dies after 13-year-old driver crashes into canal, FHP says

A fatal crash into a canal in Miramar Saturday sent two teen boys to the hospital and killed a third, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Just before 7 p.m., FHP received a call of a single car crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Miramar. Troopers say a car crashed into a guardrail and then went into a canal, submerging the car.

A passenger, a 13-year-old whose identity was not confirmed, was killed in the crash, FHP said. Divers extracted the victim from the submerged car and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, who is also 13, and a second passenger, 14, had only minor injuries. Both taken to Memorial Regional of Hollywood. All were wearing seatbelts, FHP said.

The case is still being investigated, troopers said.
