Divers in Hampton train for rescue and underwater missions

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — With Hampton Roads surrounded by water, people could find themselves in dangerous situations. Luckily, there are professionals trained to get into the water at a moments notice and help.

The Hampton Joint Public Safety Dive team trains for moments when they may be needed.

“This is a training day for the Hampton Joint Public Safety Dive team,” Sgt. Reginald Williams, of the Hampton Dive Team, said. “Our dive team is composed of both police and fire members. We’re the only joint fire and police dive team. But there are many dive teams in the region that operate on the same standards and at the same level of training that we do.”

Training is crucial in order to take the plunge safely. Training occurs monthly, this week, divers performed a stress inoculation course, similar to an obstacle course — while blindfolded.

“It will test their diver comfort where they have to navigate various obstacles that they might face in the real world.”
