District 1 Councilor Alma Castro to hold second town hall Wednesday

May 14—Santa Fe City Councilor Alma Castro will hold a town hall Wednesday evening focused on housing.

The event, at Mandela International Magnet School, follows a February town hall that focused largely on residents' complaints about nuisance properties.

Castro, who represents District 1, said she hopes to hold a town hall every quarter.

Representatives from the Interfaith Community Shelter at Pete's Place and the S3 Santa Fe Housing Initiative will be present, along with city officials.

Castro said she hopes to show attendees how to submit complaints through the city's online portal and provide an update on nuisance properties, several of which have been demolished.

The town hall comes several weeks after a police shooting outside the shelter. The incident began at Castro's family restaurant, Cafe Castro, when a man was suspected of stealing a knife from the kitchen and attempting to carjack a family in the parking lot.

After a chaotic series of events along Cerrillos Road, the man was shot twice by Santa Fe police.

Castro says it's likely homelessness will be a major topic of conversation.

Doors to the event, at 1604 Agua Fría St., will open at 5:30 p.m. and the conversation will begin around 6 p.m. and is scheduled to last until 7:30 p.m.

A future town hall is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 30.
