Disney fans find Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge soda bottles for sale in 'random' Alabama store

Disney Parks may be shut down, but a few fans of the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge got their fix elsewhere.

Clayton Williams, an 18-year-old University of Central Florida student, was one of several fans to purchase cases of the "Star Wars" parks' famous Coke bottles designed to look like thermal detonators, from a grocery store in Hartford, Alabama.

The unique-looking soft drink bottles were especially designed by Coca-Cola to be sold "exclusively" at the Galaxy's Edge parks in Walt Disney World and Disneyland, both of which opened last year. All Disney parks are currently closed over coronavirus concerns.

Multiple photos shared online Sunday showed sealed 12-pack cases of the special Coke, Diet Coke and Sprite bottles sitting on a wooden pallet in the middle of an aisle at Tate's Supermarket.

"Interesting find of the day... this random little store near where I live has whole 12 packs of Galaxy’s Edge drinks for $6.99," tweeted @escapedstitch on Sunday. One bottle goes for about $6 inside the parks.

Williams, who had been home from college due to quarantine and "had nothing else to do," told USA TODAY that seeing the photos online inspired him to make the hour-long drive to the store the next day. He ended up buying 10 cases of the soda bottles – many of which, his friends gave him money to buy for them – for $76.19 total.

"If I knew that they would be this sought after, it would've been a nice way to save up some money for college, maybe even a Nintendo Switch with them currently being sold at a high dollar," he added.

Williams said he talked to a few of the store's employees, but "none of them seemed in a position to know how (the bottles) originated there." USA TODAY has reached out to Disney Parks, Coca-Cola and the supermarket for more information.

In the "Star Wars" films, "thermal detonators are grenade-like weapons that pack tremendous explosive power into a small sphere, and are used by bounty hunters and military forces such as the Empire’s stormtroopers," according to the franchise's website.

The special soda bottles made headlines last summer, when fans of the franchise began attempting to bring them home from vacation, only for TSA officers to confiscate the explosive-lookalikes.

The Transportation Security Administration doesn't allow "replica and inert explosives" in "either carry-on or checked bags," TSA public affairs representative Thomas Kelly told USA TODAY in August.

It later adjusted the policy to allow passengers to fly with the souvenirs and instructed officers to treat the bottles as oversized liquids.
