Diplomatic talks with Putin dependent on timing – Scholz

A return to direct talks with Vladimir Putin hinges on his acknowledgment of the necessity to withdraw Russian troops from Ukraine, with current diplomatic efforts concentrated at the adviser level, German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz said, cited by Die Tageszeitung on April 12.

Scholz said that he spoke with Putin last time in December 2022, and since then there has been no direct contact.

“Such negotiations make sense if you have a feeling that you can achieve something,” Scholz said.

“Currently, Russian war speaks against this. In the past, I held several talks with Putin, which were sometimes perceived critically. And I do not rule out further negotiations in the future.”

“At the initiative of Ukrainian government, diplomatic efforts are also underway at level of national security advisors, which also involve countries of Global South - this is important,” he added.

When asked when it would make sense to talk to Putin again, Chancellor replied that “when the time is right,” and explained that such a time would come when Russian dictator realizes that he must stop the war and withdraw his troops from Ukraine.
