Different location, same merchandise: Naughty But Nice returns to downtown Ashland

Mar. 10—ASHLAND — An adult shop offering a variety of exotic items and lingerie has reopened its doors in Ashland.

"It's great," said James Perkins, who owns Naughty But Nice with his wife, Ruth Ann. "We have so many repeat customers. They are just so glad to see us back in business."

Naughty But Nice on Greenup Avenue has everything one may want to fulfill love-life fantasies, including lubricants, oils, lingerie and personal pleasure toys.

The shop's reopening fills a void among Ashland businesses that has been vacant since last summer, when the store's Winchester Avenue location lease was not renewed.

Perkins looked at area real estate to find a place before settling on a storefront a block behind his old location.

"When I started (to remodel) I said I wanted to be the nicest store on Greenup (Avenue). Now, I think this is the nicest store in Ashland," he said.

The shop was completely redone, from the floor to the roof, and from the front door to the back wall.

When he bought the building, the roof leaked and had holes "large enough to drive a car through," Perkins said.

He also had to pour a new concrete floor, redo all the wiring and gas lines in the building and rebuild the front of the store, replacing the garage doors from the old motorcycle shop with a line of windows and a stacked stone facade on the building.

Perkins said one of the goals with the design on the store was to give the shop a "woman's touch."

To that end, Perkins has had murals painted on the walls in a classic pin-up style, and he has added Tiffany-style lamps around the store. The hangers for the lamps were repurposed from a staircase he removed.

Repurposing items was something Perkins did throughout the store, including using the old gas lines as conduit to hang lighting fixtures and fans from.

The goal was for the store to be bright and inviting to its customers and not "feel like a smut store," Perkins said.

The customers are happy to see the return of Naughty But Nice, he said.

"They are freaking out, they can't believe it," Perkins said, talking about customer feedback about the shop.

He said the store does exceptionally well in selling merchandise and said over the years the store has become a big hit for local customers.

Perkins originally opened his private business in 1986.

The store has a grand re-opening planned for Monday (today). It is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
