Why Diamondbacks legend Luis Gonzalez made Phoenix his home
As a professional athlete, Luis Gonzalez moved around a lot, but Phoenix has always felt like home to him.
The Diamondbacks legend, who is also a senior adviser to the president and CEO of the team, came to Phoenix in 1999. As time went on, he realized the Valley of the Sun was where he wanted to live.
“I feel attached to the fans and the people here,” Gonzalez said.
He became the Diamondbacks icon and Game 7 hero of the 2001 World Series after hitting the game-winning single.
“It’s always great to have that platform of being a pro athlete, but I think it’s most important what you do off the field also that makes impacts,” Gonzalez said.
The Diamondbacks pride themselves on making a difference in the community.
“I love it here. I love the organization, the people, the community, the state,” Gonzalez said. “You just feel like you’re part of a family.”
