Developmental Disabilities Month is reminder of progress made in addressing the issue
The Wayne County commissioners recently recognized March as Developmental Disabilities Month and praised the work of the Wayne County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
Developmental disabilities encompass various conditions that affect an individual’s physical, cognitive and behavioral abilities. The disabilities typically manifest early in life and can impact a person’s daily functioning, communication skills, and social interactions.
Conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disabilities fall under the umbrella of developmental disabilities.
“For more than 700 individuals, the mission has been and remains to ensure that our county offers options and support to meet their hopes and dreams,” Commissioner Jon Hofstetter read from a proclamation. “This month, and all the others, we strive to ensure that those served are met with support, acceptance, and praise as they work for a life fulfilled and as independent as possible.”
Continued advocacy and support is critical
During Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, it is vital to highlight the need for continued advocacy and support for individuals with developmental disabilities. A more compassionate and supportive world can be created by promoting awareness, understanding, and inclusivity.
The observance of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the progress made in advancing the rights and well-being of individuals with developmental disabilities. It also calls us to continue advocating for equality, accessibility, and dignity for all members of society.
