Deutsch Institute raising funds for repairs

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A NEPA non-profit that has helped people with physical and intellectual disabilities for decades. Now, it needs some help of its own after devastation struck its facility.

A setback from Mother Nature isn’t stopping the Deutsch Institute from expanding in Lackawanna County.

This building in Robinson Park on Scranton’s East Mountain is the future home of the Deutsch Institute.

It’s a nonprofit organization that provides recreation and leisure opportunities for people with special needs across five counties.

“We haven’t had a hub in the Scranton area where we can have our participants come and take part in yoga classes, cooking classes, and art,” Marylou Grogan the board chair at Deutsch Institute.

The city of Scranton is renovating the outdoor park, but the institute has to foot the bill for the building.

Torrential downpours last summer caused a leak in the roof and put renovations on pause.

“We are looking to private funding as well as our upcoming brunch which is this Sunday, to help us get over the threshold and finish the renovations,” continued Grogan.

Proceeds from the institute’s annual brunch at the Waldorf Park Social Club will help pay for costly repairs.

Grogan says the goal is to open this fall and make a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities by offering programming.

“Bowling leagues, and dances, and trips, and arts and leisure activities, so they can enjoy life and participate in activities with their friends. We want to keep that going for another 50 years in northeastern Pennsylvania,” explained Grogan.
