Detroit News, Free Press to move from downtown offices to site better suited to digital age
DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press plan to move from their downtown offices into a new home.
The Detroit Media Partnership said Wednesday that the move will occur in the next year to 18 months.
The Partnership is the business agent for the newspapers.
Partnership President Joyce Jenereaux says the aging Detroit News building is "historic, but it's been obsolete for decades."
The Detroit News has been in the building since 1917, and the Free Press left its previous historic home and arrived in 1998. The building is being sold.
Jenereaux says the move will be to a space suitable for the digital age. The newspapers and the partnership employ about 600 workers downtown. The move isn't expected to result in any layoffs.
