Detroit Free Press takes home honors in 90th National Headliner Awards

Detroit Free Press reporters and a photographer won across five categories of the 90th annual National Headliner Awards.

The National Headliner Awards recognize the best print, radio, television and online journalism in the U.S. from the previous year, according to the awards website. A panel of 17 judges across print and broadcast journalism selected the 2024 awardees.

"Our newsroom is filled with people that are compelled to serve the community by filling information needs and documenting our collective story. Our journalists don't do what they do to win awards," said Nicole Avery Nichols, editor and vice president of the Detroit Free Press. "With that said, I am exceedingly proud that this work is considered among the best coverage from 2023. Our award winners are exceptionally hardworking and committed, which makes this recognition so special."

For newspapers breaking news, all sizes, the Detroit Free Press staff won second place for coverage of the February 2023 shooting at Michigan State University. The piece was reported by reporter Darcie Moran, Lansing Bureau Chief Paul Egan, former higher education reporter David Jesse, State Politics and Government Editor Emily Lawler and criminal justice reporter Andrea May Sahouri.

Detroit Free Press sports columnist Shawn Windsor won third place in newspaper sports opinions by an individual for a piece on the aftermath of the Michigan State University shooting.

In newspapers feature writing by an individual in a top 20 media market, Detroit Free Press Columnist John Carlisle won first place for a collection of narratives called "Stories from the Forgotten Countryside."

"These were wonderful, authentic stories told in an easy, seamless and gracious style," the judges' comments said. "John Carlisle is such a gifted writer, with descriptions of dying cherry trees, a dog who finds a home in a nursing home … But his other great gift is finding these stories in the first place. Thank you for the pleasure of reading these stories."

Detroit Free Press staff photographer Mandi Wright won third place in multiple day photo story for photography in reporting on a Detroit resident with drug addiction.

The Free Press digital team's social media efforts — led by web editors Amy Huschka and Elissa Robinson, and social, search and audience editor Brian Manzullo — won third place in that category for “Using Social Media to Halt Misinformation, Help Michiganders Cope" during the aftermath of the MSU shooting.
