Some Detroit city offices closed for furlough day

Budget-mandated furlough day closes City Council, recreation centers, other Detroit offices

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit City Council, mayoral and a number of other offices will be closed Monday as part of budget-mandated furlough days.

Recreation centers, human resources, the Board of Ethics, building authority, Human Rights, purchasing and the Greater Detroit Resource Recovery Authority also will be closed.

Payroll, public works, income tax assessments, property tax, treasury and planning and development offices will be open.

Furlough days are unpaid days off for city workers and part of Mayor Dave Bing's efforts to cut spending. Detroit faces a $327 million budget deficit and has more than $14 billion in long-term debt.

Gov. Rick Snyder placed the city under state oversight last month by appointing bankruptcy attorney and turnaround specialist Kevyn Orr as Detroit's emergency manager.
