Postal Inspector speaks out after mail carrier killed

WARREN, Ohio (WJW) — The U.S. Postal Inspector in Cleveland has released a statement regarding the deadly shooting of a postal carrier Saturday afternoon in Warren. Detectives are investigating the shooting.

The shooting happened near Washington Street and Olive Avenue in the city.

City officials confirmed to the I-Team late Saturday night that the mail carrier died.

Postal Inspector Ian Ortega is asking the public’s help for any information on this crime and released the following statement to the Fox 8 I-TEAM.

Earlier today, (Saturday) postal inspectors responded to Warren, Ohio, for a reported shooting of a postal employee. The employee was taken to the hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family, friends, and fellow postal employees.

This homicide is being investigated by postal inspectors alongside the Warren Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.  At this point in time, we are still in the early investigative stages, so I cannot provide specifics at this time.  

The Postal Inspection Service views the security and well-being of postal service employees as its top priority and will work tirelessly with our law enforcement partners to bring those responsible for this senseless crime to justice.

“Senseless act of violence and our condolences go out to the victim’s family,” said Warren Safety-Service Director Eddie Colbert.

He said it is too early in the investigation to know the motive for the shooting. No arrests have been made at this time.
