Des Moines City Council sets date for special election to fill at-large seat

Voters will choose a new at-large City Council member in a special election March 19.

The council voted to approve the date during a special meeting Friday. Whoever is elected will serve the remainder of Mayor Connie Boesen's former term through January 2026.

Her at-large seat was vacated when she was sworn in as mayor this year.

Interested candidates must file their nomination paperwork with the Polk County Auditor's Office by 5 p.m. Feb. 23. Because at-large positions represent the entire city, any Des Moines resident who is 18 or older and is not a convicted felon can run.

This story has been updated to correct the date nomination paperwork is due.
