Deputy chief: Commercial garage destroyed by fire in Stoystown

Mar. 23—SHANKSVILLE, Pa. — Fire destroyed the Hauger's Automotive Services garage, located at 1583 Lambertsville Rd., Stoystown, early Saturday morning, according to a report from Shanksville Fire Company Deputy Chief John Abramowich.

A dispatch went out at 2:30 a.m.

Abramowich said flames were already through the roof and garage door when his department arrived.

"It was strictly a defensive attack from the get-go," Abramowich said. "With that being said, fortunately there were no injuries, no interior attack. Obviously, it was a total loss."

Knockdown was reported at 4 a.m.

"There were seven vehicles inside the structure at the time, so that made it difficult," Abramowich said. "Between the seven vehicles and the wind, it was extremely difficult to get a good knockdown. It was also a metal building. So once the roof collapsed, it just acted as an umbrella and we had to get an excavator in there to peel the metal back to be able to put out the hotspots and extinguish the fire."

Firefighters from the Shanksville, Central City, Stoystown, Berlin, Listie, Friedens, Hooversville and Sipesville departments responded, along with Berlin EMS and Somerset County's Hazardous Materials Response Team, per county emergency services.

A fire marshal investigated. The cause was undetermined as of Saturday afternoon.
