Deputies: Gallons of fuel spilled in Springfield crash

SPRINGFIELD, Mich. (WOOD) — Up to 100 gallons of fuel may have been spilled on a Springfield road during a crash between a semi-truck and a box truck Tuesday, deputies said.

It happened around 10:09 a.m. on W Dickman Road at N Helmer Road. A semi-truck hauling grain headed west on Dickman Road was turning left onto southbound N Helmer Road when a commercial box truck headed east on Dickman crashed into the semi-truck, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash caused the semi-truck’s fuel tank to burst and spill about 75 to 100 gallons of diesel fuel in the road, deputies said. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management, Springfield Fire Department and Patriot Spill Response worked together to clean up the spill. The Environmental Protection Agency was notified of the spill, the sheriff’s office said.

The passenger of the box truck was injured and treated at the scene by first responders.

Traffic was disrupted following the crash but has since returned to normal.
