Department of Human Services observes Children’s Mental Health Acceptance Week

CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — The Bureau of Behavioral Health (BBH) division of the West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS) is honoring Children’s Mental Health acceptance this week.

BBH aims to spread awareness of the importance pertaining to the mental health of children and the need for support and mental health services to help kids achieve success.

Mental Health Awareness Month observed by the West Virginia Department of Human Services

May 5-11 has been designated as Children’s Mental Health Acceptance Week by Governor Jim Justice.

Seeing the resilience of our children shines a light on the importance of support systems for West Virginia families navigating mental health challenges. Let’s come together to ensure every child feels heard, understood, and supported on their journey to wellness.

Help4WV operates a source of support, the Children’s Crisis and Referral Line, to assist families with finding services in their area. The ability to call or text the helpline at 844-HELP4WV (1-844-435-7498 or to chat here is available 24/7 to connect families with mobile crises response and stabilization teams. These teams assist in de-escalating situations by phone and can respond in person in crisis situations if families prefer.

January recognized as Mental Wellness Month in West Virginia

People regardless of age can call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline if experiencing emotional destress. The lifeline provides 24/7 access to trained crisis personnel that can help those who are struggling with mental health issues such as thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or other cases of emotional distress. Families may also call or text 988 if they are concerned for loved ones who may be in need of support.
