Mike Peterson is leaving the South Carolina football team to be an assistant coach for the Florida Gators, but not before sharing a farewell message Wednesday evening via social media.

Peterson sent a message of gratitude to the Gamecocks, thanking coaches Will Muschamp and Shane Beamer, his players and the fans, among others.

Peterson has been South Carolina’s outside linebackers coach since 2016 — where he most recently coached such edge linemen as Kingsley “JJ” Enagbare, Jordan Burch, Jordan Strachan and Aaron Sterling. He’ll be taking the same job at Florida under new head coach Billy Napier and assume the role of alumni liaison with the Gators team.

Peterson played linebacker at Florida from 1995-98 and was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.

Here’s his full message that he shared on Twitter.

“Dear Gamecock Family,

“It is difficult to put into words what my experience with the University of South Carolina football program has meant to me and my family. The gratitude I feel for Gamecock Nation is overwhelming. I cannot thank Coach Muschamp enough for giving me this wonderful opportunity to coach at an incredible institution and Coach Beamer for allowing me to remain on staff this past year.

“Thank you Coach Beamer and Emily for your infectious positive attitude you have imparted not only on me but the entire University of South Carolina.

“I had no idea the move to Columbia six years ago would enrich my life in so many ways. The growth I have made as a coach, colleague, friend, husband and father while at Carolina is immeasurable.

“A hearfelt thank you to all the football coaches and support staff, Athletic Director Ray Tanner, Coach Frank Martin and Coach Dawn Staley for your kindness, support and friendship.

“I especially want the thank my players who I love and respect for all your hard work and dedication on and off the field. I will never forget all the sweat, tears, handshakes, hugs and laughter we have shared. You are a constant reminder of how lucky I am to be able to share my love of the game with such talented young men. Always remember that you are my family and I am grateful for the impact you have made on me and my children’s lives.

“Last but not least, thank you Gamecock fans for truly being the best. ... Forever to Thee.”
