This was Denver’s wettest April so far in the 21st century

DENVER (KDVR) — April 2024 has made it into the local weather history books as the 18th wettest April in Denver history and the wettest so far this century, according to data from the National Weather Service.

As of Sunday, Denver received 3.28 inches of precipitation. The last time the city saw over 3 inches was in 2009 with 3.22 inches.

It will likely not come close to the 5.86 inches that fell in April 1999, the second-wettest April in Denver history. To do that, the city would need over 2 inches of rain in the remaining two days of the month.

Denver would, in turn, need around 5 inches of rain to break the current record-holder. In April 1900, Denver was hit with an incredible 8.24 inches.

Most of this precipitation came Saturday when the city was hit with 1.50 inches of rain and snow in 24 hours. This was the wettest April day since 2007 or 17 years.

The past 5 years have been drier than usual

Typically, Denver will see 1.68 inches of rain in April, but in the last few years, the city has seen much less than that, save for two notable exceptions:

  • 2020 – 0.54 inches

  • 2021 – 2.02 inches

  • 2022 – 0.06 inches

  • 2023 – 0.8 inches

  • 2024 – 3.28 inches

While the popular adage is that “April showers bring May flowers,” May is typically when Denver sees the most precipitation, with an average of 2.16 inches falling that month.

On average, April comes in as the fourth wettest month overall behind No. 2 July and No. 3 June.
