Denver weather: Fire danger, mountain snow; Pinpoint Weather Alert Day Saturday

DENVER (KDVR) — A storm system is heading to Colorado and Denver weather for the weekend, and it will create fire concerns and travel problems in the Colorado mountains. A Pinpoint Weather Alert Day has been issued for Saturday.

Saturday will see gusts up to 30-40 mph at times. A red flag warning for Denver and the Front Range will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There should be no open burning or doing anything that causes a spark across the Eastern Plains of Colorado.

The bigger concern is in the Colorado mountains over the weekend. Snow will get underway in the mountains late on Saturday and turn heavy, with blowing snow and low visibility through late Sunday making travel difficult. Snow totals could exceed a foot in some areas by late Sunday, according to Pinpoint Weather, Colorado’s Most Accurate Forecast.

Weather tomorrow: Pinpoint Weather Alert Day

Saturday will be “the warm before the storm,” with sunny skies over eastern Colorado and warm afternoon highs running about 15 to 20 degrees above normal.

High wind is expected across the Denver metro while the red flag warning is in place. The biggest concern for strong wind will be in southern Colorado south of Pueblo, where a high wind warning is in place.

It will be mild in the mountains before the snow develops later in the day, with heavy, blowing snow and low visibility expected to create travel problems the Colorado mountains.

Looking ahead: Rain and snow showers

A cold front is expected to arrive early on Sunday morning along the Front Range and in metro Denver. Temperatures are forecast to cool slightly into the 50s.

There will be some rain and snow showers early that will likely change to rain showers late in the morning before ending in the afternoon. If there is going to be any snow accumulation along the Front Range, it looks to be mainly south of the city and less than an inch, which should melt quickly.
