Denver, for example, normally records the last freeze of the season on May 5. Castle Rock normally hits freezing for the last time on May 22, and Evergreen is usually not done with freezing temperatures until June 2.
But Denver has made it as late as June 8, 2007, recording low temperatures at or below 32 degrees. By contrast, April 5 is the earliest last freeze of the season for the Denver area, which happened in 1977 and 1981.
In the last few years, Denver has recorded the last freeze of the season between April 23 and May 22. If Denver does not fall below freezing again this season, the last freeze of 2024 will be May 4, when Denver fell to a low of 31 degrees.
Since Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday of May, that’s why residents are generally safe to plant outside after Mother’s Day.
