Denver to start work on Speer Boulevard bridge this week

DENVER (KDVR) — Those who commute on Speer Boulevard through the Auraria neighborhood will have to prepare for some lane closures.

Starting this week, Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure crews will start preventive maintenance work on a bridge along Speer Boulevard.

This maintenance work is part of a larger project. The city completed work on two other bridges along Speer in 2023 — one along the South Platte River and one over Little Raven Street.

Now, crews will be addressing the third and final bridge over the railroad tracks along Speer.

Because of this work, drivers should prepare for lane closures.

Beginning this week, there will be a double right lane closure on northbound Speer Boulevard between Interstate 25 and Auraria Parkway. After the end of the NBA and NHL seasons, the city said double right lane closures on southbound Speer will take effect.

After the work on the right lanes is completed in mid to late summer, work will begin on the left lanes.

The same closures will be in place. The double left lanes will be closed on north and southbound Speer between I-25 and Auraria Parkway. This work will last into the fall.

The city said at least two travel lanes will remain open in each direction during the project.

“Work on the bridge over the railroad tracks includes rotomilling and overlaying fresh asphalt over the bridge, removal and replacement of bridge deck waterproofing membrane, bridge deck repairs, removal and replacement of bridge expansion joints, backwall repairs and final striping,” said the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Message boards will be posted to alert drivers to the changes.

The bridge work is expected to wrap up in late fall.
