Denver St. Patrick’s Day festivities will go on despite snow

DENVER (KDVR) — Despite the biggest snowstorm of the season arriving on Thursday, St. Patrick’s Day festivities will happen in Denver, rain or shine.

On Saturday, March 16, the 62nd annual Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade will march through lower downtown. Thankfully, the snowstorm will be over by then.

How much snow is expected to fall during Thursday’s storm?

“Some of you may be asking, is the Parade on? Of course, it is. We are Coloradans and we live for the white stuff. So, don’t put that winter coat away yet, you may need it. I’ll be in Kilt and Irish Sweater, perfect for days like these. See you on Saturday,” said President Dave Anderson in a statement published on the organization’s website.

But before the big parade, the parade committee is holding a changing of the signs ceremony and a Grand Marshal Gala, even with a foot of snow expected.

Heavy snow to fall consistently on Thursday

The Pinpoint Weather team has been tracking a major snowstorm that will make its way into the metro beginning as rain on Wednesday afternoon.

Wet and heavy snow will fall continuously throughout Thursday before tapering off by Friday morning.

Snow totals will continue to change as the storm gets closer, but as of Tuesday morning, downtown Denver is expected to receive a foot of snow.

Festivities will go on

The parade committee said they have been assured by the city of Denver that the plows will be working to clear the roads ahead of Saturday’s big parade.

The parade committee also confirmed that the “Changing of the Signs” ceremony will still happen at noon on Thursday at the corner of 20th Street and Blake Street where it will be turned into Tooley Street.

However, if the snow is heavy, the ceremony will be moved inside Jackson’s Lodo.

The Grand Marshal Gala will also take place on Thursday at Cableland.

According to the parade committee, plows will work to clear snow to ensure the driveway and venue are ready for the event when it starts at 7 p.m.

Tickets are still available for the Grand Marshal Gala. You can visit the parade’s website to learn more.

If you choose to brave the storm and attend either event, be sure to bundle up. Temperatures will be in the low to mid-30s on Thursday.
