Denver to plow residential streets during Thursday snowstorm

DENVER (KDVR) — Denver will plow residential streets during and after Thursday’s major snowstorm, according to Mayor Mike Johnston.

Thursday is a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day as Denver is expected to be hit with large amounts of wet, heavy snow that will majorly impact travel in and around the city. Denver officials have planned to deploy the highest level of response to this storm, meaning more extensive plowing operations than Denver normally sees.

Major roadways expected to close for heavy snow in Colorado

With this, all 54 heavy snowplows will be deployed to clear the city’s major streets, which are classified as any street with a stripe on it. Johnston said the plan is to have each plow do two passes on each street every 24 hours.

There will also be 36 residential plows out to clear smaller streets.

The plan is to plow each residential street once every 24 hours. The plows will make one sweep through the middle of each street.

Additionally, the city will attempt to clear protected bike lanes wherever possible. Johnston said it may take up to 24 to 36 hours for those to be cleared.

Stay off the roads if possible

Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Executive Director Amy Ford said anyone who can avoid driving on Thursday should. Driving is expected to be very dangerous because of the heavy snow.

The Colorado Department of Transportation advised that several major roadways across the state are expected to close Thursday because of this snowstorm. This includes parts of Interstate 25 and Interstate 70.
