Denver International Airport falls in rank for busiest airports in the world in 2023

DENVER (KDVR) — Last year was the busiest year on record for the Denver International Airport, however, the airport dropped in its world rankings.

Data points to DIA no longer ranking as the third-busiest airport in the world, but the traffic isn’t necessarily lessening. Airports Council International released preliminary rankings for the world’s busiest airports in 2023 based on total passenger traffic.

Why Denver International Airport doesn’t call itself ‘DIA’

According to DIA, Denver used to be ranked third-busiest in the world in 2021 and 2022 — until three airports surpassed DIA last year.

DIA presented the data from the Airports Council International in a graph:

In 2022, only Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport surpassed DIA for the busiest airports worldwide. Based on the new rankings, Dubai International Airport, Heathrow Airport and Haneda Airport also joined the top of the list, knocking DIA to the sixth-busiest in the world.

“The continued recovery of travel demand across other regions of the world has attributed to DEN’s drop in the 2023 worldwide rankings. Notably, airports in Dubai, London and Tokyo surpassed DEN last year,” DIA said in a press release.

While Denver ranked lower on the list than the previous reports, its passenger numbers aren’t dropping — they’re going up.

According to DIA, the airport served more than 70 million annual passengers for the first time in history. Meanwhile, the airport also saw international travel spikes and had its first month with over 7 million passengers.

Even though Denver’s airport is no longer the third-busiest, there are still going to be people at the airport. However, it’s more likely to see even more passengers in the London, Tokyo and Dubai airports.
