Denver hotel shelter security check turns up ammunition, but no guns

DENVER (KDVR) — No firearms were recovered during a room-by-room security search of a former Denver hotel converted into a homeless shelter and operated by the Salvation Army.

The inspections were a response to a series of violent crimes, including two people’s shooting deaths and another who was injured in a separate shooting days later on Wednesday, March 27. The Salvation Army led the room searches on Thursday, April 4, using a private security force, according to the Denver Police Department.

DPD assisted in conducting the searches, as did Denver Housing Stability. FOX31’s Nicole Fierro was there while the search was conducted and asked for details on the sweep.

“What we’re engaging in is a comprehensive security inspection underway of the entire property, all guestrooms, all common areas, all areas of the grounds,” said Derek Woodbury, communications director with Denver’s Department of Housing Stability.

Inspections at Denver hotel shelter leave some feeling safer

The shelter, formerly a DoubleTree, is located at 4040 Quebec St. According to the city of Denver, the hotel is part of the All In Mile High Initiative to provide temporary shelter for people experiencing homelessness.

Denver police said “approximately a dozen rounds” of ammunition were recovered at the shelter, but no firearms. There was also an empty magazine for a firearm, but the department stated they couldn’t speak to other prohibited items that were removed. The department also reported no one was arrested during the searches.

DPD said on March 28 that officers have responded to 465 calls for service since Jan. 1 at the shelter for reports including drugs, assault, domestic violence and more.
