Denim Day: Local resources for Georgia and Alabama residents impacted by sexual violence

(WRBL) — The last Wednesday of every April marks a day focused on bringing awareness to sexual violence.

“Denim Day” began as a response to a high-profile rape case in Italy, according to the organization.

An Italian Supreme Court Justice overturned a rape conviction in 1992, suggesting the victim’s jeans were “too tight” to be removed without her own help. The reasoning became known throughout Italy and referred to as the “jeans alibi.”

In response, women in the Italian Parliament protested on the steps of the Supreme Court while donning jeans. The protest spread internationally and eventually reached Los Angeles, where the first Denim Day was born.

Nearly 25 years have passed, and advocates are still sporting denim every last Wednesday of April.
