Democratic Rep. Himes: Trump knock on London mayor ‘inappropriate for a toddler’

Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., didn’t mince words Tuesday when he responded to President Trump’s provocative tweets following last weekend’s terror attack in London.

“What Donald Trump did in response to the British tragedy was, again, I think inappropriate for a toddler, much less the president of the United States,” Himes said on CNN’s “New Day.”

Trump drew widespread criticism with his freewheeling Twitter missives in the aftermath of the attack, which killed seven people. Among other things, Trump repeatedly chastised London Mayor Sadiq Khan for telling residents of his city that there was “no reason to be alarmed” by increased police presence. Trump took Khan’s comments out of context, implying that the mayor told Londoners not to be worried about the attack itself.

On Monday, Himes called the president “dangerous.” On Sunday, he called Trump’s behavior “unhinged.”

“Why do I use language like that?” Himes asked on CNN. “You need to be about 9 years old in your social development to understand that when your neighbor, your friend, your brother, your sister — which is what the British are to us — have suffered a great tragedy, the only decent response is to say, ‘I’m terribly sorry, and how can I help?’”

Himes also said that his experiences on the House Intelligence Committee have led him to believe that the president’s comments convey that he would not be able to respond appropriately should a similar attack occur on American soil.

“The president of the United States is damaging the national security of the United States and making us a laughingstock around the world at a moment in time when American leadership is particularly critical,” Himes said.

“Sadly, this is just today’s installment of the Donald Trump reality show.”

He continued his criticism after the “New Day” interview.
