Democratic National Convention: Showbiz on the Bill as Hillary Clinton Is Formally Nominated

PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Clinton will be formally nominated as the first woman to lead a major party ticket on Tuesday night, as questions linger on the extent to which supporters of her rival Bernie Sanders will stage demonstrations for their candidate.

The roll call vote will be the first major piece of business, but the lineup speakers throughout the evening includes actors Elizabeth Banks, Tony Goldwyn, America Ferrera and Lena Dunham, Debra Messing, Erika Alexander and Meryl Streep. Singers Andra Day and Alicia Keys are scheduled to perform.

Day 2’s official theme is “A Lifetime of Fighting for Children and Families” and will also feature the Mothers of the Movement — women who lost their children to gun violence and excessive police force. Among them, Eric Garner’s mother Gwen Carr, Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton and Sandra Bland’s mother Geneva Reed-Veal.

Hillary’s husband and former President Bill Clinton will be the keynote speaker. Former President Jimmy Carter will appear in a taped message. No former presidents spoke at last week’s Republican National Convention.

She will formally accept the party’s nomination on Thursday night in Philadelphia.
