Wild West Carnival

The public is invited to Ranger Walker's Wild West Cowboy Carnival from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 2455 Hatch Hwy. (NM 26).

Guests can expect an obstacle course, Gospel singing, mechanical bull, barrel train, bouncy house, and more games and prizes.

You will be able to meet the horse that wears sneakers and Dixie, the trick dog that rides a horse.

This event is free, and so are the hot dogs. Sponsored by Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and Roundup Ministries. For more information, call 575-545-5186.

Meet the artists

The Deming Art Council will host a Meet the Artists reception from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, at the Deming Art Center, 100 S. Gold St. The Fire & Fiber Art exhibit will be on display for the month of July at the center.

An explosion of color and texture marks the July exhibit at the center. Fire & Fiber exhibitors from Las Cruces and Deming area have filled the gallery with exciting clay and fiber creations.

Sponsored by the Potter’s Guild of Las Cruces, this exhibit represents the collaboration of clay artists and fiber artists.

NMSP checkpoints

New Mexico State Police will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols; and registration, insurance, and driver's license checkpoints in all New

Mexico counties during July.

NMSP is bringing awareness to these events to reduce impaired driving-related fatalities through continued media attention and intensive advertising.

These checkpoints are helping to change society's attitude about driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.

Hundreds of lives could be saved each year if every driver had the courage to

make the right decision not to drive impaired.

July 4th closing

All New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions’ offices, including the Unemployment Insurance Operations Center, will be closed on Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. The department urges claimants to plan accordingly.

St. Vincent's half-off sale

The annual half-off sale is on for the month of July at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, located at 400 S. 12th St. in Deming, NM. The main store, hardware store, and the new Holiday House will all be on sale.

All profits benefit the traveling homeless with clothes and shelter. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday.

Church barbecue plates

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church at 513 W. First St. in Deming, NM will have a barbecue fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday. Plates are $10 for brisket or ribs and $12 for a combination of brisket and ribs.

Delivery is available within city limits. Call 575-936-4279 after 10 a.m. on Friday for orders.  Proceeds benefit the building revitalization project.

County road alert

The Luna County Road Department has turned the intersection of Solana SW and Lucca SW roads into an all-way stop. Please slow down, use caution, and follow all traffic signs.

Blood donor drawing

As a special thank you to donors for helping replenish the blood supply, donors who give with Vitalant will be entered to win one of 3, $3,000 prepaid gift cards. That will go a long way toward filling your gas tank for a year, keep your pantry shelves full or more.

The deadline for blood donors to qualify for the drawings is July 20, 2022.

Hundreds of appointments still need to be filled in New Mexico to prevent any delays in patient care.

Blood donations continue to go out to hospitals more quickly than they are being collected.

Donors of all blood types are needed, especially type O.

The majority of people are eligible, but only 3% give.

Free smoke alarms

On July 25 and 26, beginning at 10 a.m., the Luna County Fire Department and Smoke Alarms Save Lives! will install free smoke alarms to Luna County residents.

You can request a smoke alarm today and set up an appointment by calling 575-543-6641 or email Fire Chief Pablo Montoya at pablo_montoya@lunacountynm.us.

Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death from home fires in half.

Luna County is rallying volunteers, fire departments and partners to sound the alarm, where it’s safe to do so.

DHS Class of '82 reunion

Dust off those school jackets and Wildcat yearbooks, the Deming High School Class of 1982 will celebrate their 40th class reunion on Saturday, July 2.

Join your classmates from 5 to 10 p.m. at the D.H. Lescombes Winery and Tasting Room at 7075 Hwy. 549 SE for food, spirits, dancing and catching up with Wildcats on the past 40 years.
